Every first-time parent and young mother wonders what giving birth is like and what it will be like looking after a baby 24 hours a day.

You’ll wonder whether you will be able to cope, dread the scary possibility of baby blues, and whether you can be the kind of parent you want to be.

When your precious newborn arrives, you will begin wondering what to do!

First things first, do not panic as we have put together the ultimate pieces of advice for new mums!

Ignore the negatives

Being a young mother can be truly wonderful. You may hear people saying older mothers are a better parent but that is not true.

There are many young mothers who were absolutely committed to breastfeeding, having as natural a birth as possible, and accepting the responsibility that parenthood brings.

Each baby is different

It’s important for new mothers to know that each baby has their own unique traits, temperament, and personality.

Your first baby can be easy but the second may be fussy and that’s no reflection on you as a parent.

Some babies can be more needy or cry a lot than others but it is not your fault or the fault of your parenting style.

Develop your bond

Developing a strong bond with your baby is so crucial. This applies to both the mother and father.

The bond you develop as you get to know each other in the first few days, weeks and months will affect your child’s psychological and emotional health throughout his life.

Here are 3 main ways of creating a strong bond:

  1. Skin-to-skin contact

When your baby is born, he/she will normally be put on your timmy so that you are skin to skin.

If you’re breastfeeding you will generally have more skin to skin contact just through the act of feeding.

2. Eye contact

Feeding time whether you’re breast or bottle feeding, is a great time to share some quality eye contact and strengthen the bond between you and your newborn.

3. Respond to your baby’s needs

It is also vital to respond to your baby’s needs and don’t forget their emotional needs for comfort and closeness are as important as their physical needs

Plan ahead

There are many things you will need to do when caring for a newborn. Hence, planning for mealtimes, bath time trips out, and bedtime will definitely make life a lot simpler.

For instance, before you bathe your baby, you can make sure you have everything you will need afterward, such as a clean towel, clean clothes, diapers and bottom cream.

In addition, when you’re taking your baby for a stroll, you can take some of these things: spare clothes, nappies, wipes, toys, bottom cream, a spare top for yourself, breast pads, and an extra blanket.

Look after yourself

The truth is, it will be hard to find time for yourself with a new baby to look after. But, taking care of yourself is as important as taking care of your baby.

Here are some tips you can take to care for yourself.

  1. Set aside half an hour to do something you enjoy every day.

2. Treat yourself to new things.

3. Talk to someone and have a cry if you need to when you have a bad day

4. Get as much sleep as you can !

5. Eat a healthy diet.
